Keyboard Symbols
Shift Key (⇧)
Shift Key (⇧)
What it means
The upward arrow (⇧) marks the Shift key on many keyboard layouts and shortcut references. Holding Shift while typing a letter produces its uppercase form; with number keys it often types symbols.
Where you will see it
Keyboard corners, shortcut documentation, and on-screen keyboard overlays.
What you should do
Hold Shift while pressing another key for uppercase or the symbol printed above a number key.
Common mistakes
- Enabling Caps Lock when only one uppercase letter is needed.
- Forgetting that Shift affects punctuation differently on international layouts.
