Check Engine Light
What it means
A yellow or amber engine outline (often labelled "CHECK") indicates the ECU has logged a diagnostic trouble code. Causes range from a loose fuel cap to sensor failures or emissions issues.
Where you will see it
Dashboard instrument cluster, usually amber/yellow, may flash or stay solid.
What you should do
If flashing, reduce speed and avoid heavy loads—seek immediate help. If solid, schedule a diagnostic scan soon; check the fuel cap is tight first.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring a solid light for weeks, allowing minor faults to worsen.
- Assuming it is always safe to drive with a flashing check engine light.
